Younis al-Assi

Major General Younis al-Assi (يونس العاصي) was born in 1947 in the village of Dir Tarif (present-day Israel). His family was displaced in 1948 and found refuge in Rantis, a West Bank village. He was governor of Tubas between September 2018 and August 2023.

Al-Assi joined the PLO in the 1970. He served as the head of the Military Sport Council from 1996 until 2004 and then as Chairman of the Military Training Authority from 2006 until 2009. He then worked at the al-Istiqlal military academy in Jericho where he was vice president for military affairs. He holds a BA in geography from Beirut Arab University and a higher diploma from Alexandria University in Egypt; in addition to a Masters’ degree in Military Affairs.
