Electoral Court

The Electoral Court was created through a presidential decree issued by President Mahmoud Abbas in March 2021. Its mission is to adjudicate electoral issues, including those relating to the 2021 elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and presidency — taking on the role previously played by the High Court of Justice. It is led by the president of the High Court of Justice, Iman Naser al-Din and eight other judges (split evenly between Gaza and the West Bank).

The Court was formed in consultations with Hamas and the (Fatah dominated) High Judicial Council, and will have jurisdiction over both the West Bank and Gaza. It is seen as an important step towards intra-Palestinian political reconciliation and the holding of national elections.
