Sheikh Adnan Asfour, born in Nablus in 1963, is a senior Hamas official, running in the May 2021 legislative elections as a candidate on its ‘Jerusalem Is Our Promise’ list. He has represented Hamas in talks with Fatah.
He was first arrested in 1978 for attacks against the Israeli military and has spent more than 12 years in detention since then. Asfour was one of 64 Hamas officials arrested by Israel following the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by Hamas in June 2006. He was arrested by Israeli officials again in early 2021 and sentenced to administrative detention for six months.
