Presidential Elections (2021) – cancelled
Elections for the presidency of the Palestinian Authority were scheduled to take place on 31 July 2021 but were indefinitely postponed by President Mahmoud Abbas citing Israel’s refusal to permit the inclusion of East Jerusalem.
Candidacy registration was due to take place between 6-18 June, although imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti had already indicated his intention to run against Abbas.
Mahmoud Abbas was elected during the last presidential elections held in January 2005 for a four year mandate.
According to the electoral law, if none of the presidential candidates acquire an outright majority in that round, the top two candidates will go to a run-off within fifteen days. The winner is the candidate who acquires the highest number of votes in that round. The presidential term limit last 4 years.
