Mujahideen Brigades
The Mujahideen Brigades are the armed wing of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement. In practice, however, there seems to be no real distinction between the group’s military and political wings.
The Mujahideen Movement was founded in October 2000, drawing together defectors from Fatah and Palestinian Authority security forces who rejected the Oslo peace process. The group operates in both Gaza and the West Bank (including Jenin).
The Brigades have claimed responsibility for rocket fire against Israel and operate in cooperation with Islamic Jihad‘s al-Quds Brigades. The group also participated in the 7 October 2023 attacks against Israel alongside Hamas and several other Palestinian armed groups, taking Thai and Israeli hostages (including the Bibas family).
The secretary general of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement was Dr As’ad Abu Sharia until his death in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in June 2025. Its previous secretary general and co-founder, Omar Abu Sharia, was reportedly killed by Mossad while receiving hospital treatment in Tehran.
