On the rocks: Malta-EU relations in times of crisis
What policymakers across the European Union care about most does not overlap with the priorities in Malta – and during covid-19 the country has been looking for policy partners beyond Europe

Daniel Mainwaring is an independent foreign policy consultant based in Malta. He holds an MA in global policy studies from the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Among other recent positions, he has served as an advisor to the Maltese Ministry for Foreign Affairs and a researcher for the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, as well as being a regular contributor to Oxford Analytica. He specializes in irregular migration policy and Mediterranean relations, and remains active with a number of sea rescue organizations, including Sea Watch and Alarmphone. Amongst other projects, he is currently working on an interactive online platform for analysing migrant distress cases in the Maltese search and rescue zone under the auspices of the University of Edinburgh.
