As the flow of Europe-bound migrants increases from Libyan shores, the EU and its member states have taken an increasingly assertive stance to stem the tide. But what can the EU actually do?
At a a recent lunchtime event in our London offices Fiona Mangan, senior programme officer at the US Institute for Peace, and Magda Mughrabi-Talhami, Libya researcher at Amnesty International, talked about the civil war in Libya, the migration crisis in the Mediterranean and linkages between the two. They believe that the way migrants are kept in detention centres in Libya over a longer period of time needs to change and that the EU should step up and put pressure on oppressive governments.
