Apart from the first glimpses of significant reform offered by Xi Jinping the world has been fascinated by the rise and fall of eminent party officials such as Bo Xilai who point towards an overall reshuffling of Chinese power politics. John Garnaut will offer his unique insights into the inner workings of Chinese political games and will shed light on the ongoing struggle of the Chinese elite to stay at the top at all costs and what lessons the Bo Xilai case in particular holds for the coming decade under Xi Jinping.  

John Garnaut was China correspondent for Fairfax Media from July 2007 to June 2013. His pioneering work on elite Chinese politics has been globally recognised. He is the author of the short Penguin book, The Rise and Fall of the House of Bo. He is working on a second book before returning to journalism in 2014. 

François Godement is Head of the China and Asia programme at ECFR and a Professor of political science at Sciences Po Paris. François is also Director for strategy of Asia Centre, and an outside consultant to the Policy Planning Directorate of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is the author of several publications including Xi Jinping’s China.

Mark Leonard is co-Founder and Director of ECFR. Mark was a transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. His publications on China include What does China think? and China 3.0 which he edited.
