Please register for our online discussion on “Multilateral development cooperation in a competitive world” on Wednesday 29th November at 14.00-15.00 CET.
European countries are rethinking their policies on multilateral development cooperation. They face an interlocking series of crises that demand a coordinated response, yet the international system is increasingly affected by geopolitical competition. European policymakers are looking to renew their relations with the Global South to redress the lack of trust highlighted by the divergent responses to Russia’s war in Ukraine. These developments give a new importance to development cooperation policies.
The discussion will offer a chance for the speakers and online participants to consider the future of multilateral development cooperation, the relationship between development and broader European strategic interests, and the way that geopolitical competition affects cooperation on development. It coincides with the publication of a new ECFR policy brief from Senior Policy Fellow Anthony Dworkin looking at evolving views of multilateral development cooperation in four key European countries (France, Germany, the UK, and Sweden) and suggesting a way forward for European policy on multilateral development.
