EU-China relations: the end of “Chimerica”?

July 18th, 8:30am – 10:00am at the ECFR Berlin Office – Entrance: Rosmarinstraße 1, 10117 Berlin

With tensions rising between US and China, there is no neutrality option for Europe. As ECFR director Mark Leonard recently argued, this puts an end to “Chimerica”. The EU now needs to redefine its political and economic strategy vis-à-vis China, but how can EU-Chinese relations be shaped independently and in spite of the US animosity?
China’s economy is not only an important resource but has also been pointed at as risk factor for the EU. What stands behind Chinese investment strategies in Europe? What role can China and Europe play together in tomorrow’s technological innovations? Is China to be considered a “systemic rival”, in the words of the European Commission, or a privileged partner in a new global order?

We are pleased to welcome Chen Dongxiao, President of the Shangai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) to discuss these issues and China’s perspective on its relationships with the EU and Germany with us.
