Luigi Di Maio

Luigi Di Maio is the EU Special Representative for the Gulf region, a post he has held since June 2023. He previously served as Italy’s minister of foreign affairs from 2019—2022, and as deputy prime minister and minister of economic development, labour and social policies from 2018—2019. In 2013, he held the post of vice president of the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

Throughout the years, Di Maio has chaired many international high-level meetings, including three consecutive editions of the Mediterranean Dialogues (MED) conference, G20 foreign and trade ministerial meetings, the Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh in June 2021 and the first Mediterranean Ministerial Dialogue on the Food Security Crisis in June 2022.

He is an honorary professor at King’s College London and serves on the council of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), a leading think-tank that promotes informed discussion and analysis of European foreign policy.
