Why did Germany detain Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Mansour?
Prominent journalist spent almost 48 hours in detention after being arrested at the request of Egypt’s government.
Ahmed Mansour, a prominent Al Jazeera journalist, was arrested on Saturday at the request of an Egyptian court – while preparing to board a flight to Doha. Mansour was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in jail on charges of torturing a lawyer during Egypt’s 2011 revolution.
The German foreign ministry said on Monday that it was not willing to extradite someone who could potentially face the death penalty.
