The re-election of President Trump sent shockwaves across Europe and around the world. From a global perspective, Europeans are seemingly alone in their pessimism about a second Trump mandate compared to people in other countries around the world. But what does the picture look like if we zoom-in on Europe? This event is the second of a two-part series which will explore the findings of European opinion polling conducted by ECFR in Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Estonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. At a moment of shifting global, regional and national political landscapes, this discussion will explore the strategies needed to shape a future where Europe acts – rather than reacts – in the pursuit of its interests. Key questions that will be addressed include:

  • Where do Europeans converge and diverge when it comes to the transatlantic relationship, Ukraine, Russia, China?
  • In a divided Europe, are “coalitions of the willing” a solution or a recipe for further fragmentation?
  • How pragmatic does Europe need to be in a highly transactional Trumpian world?

The offline event is is invite-only, however, the livestream can be watched on zoom, please register here.

The event is being organised as part of ECFR’s Unlock Europe’s Majority project, with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Think Tank Europa, and the International Centre for Defence and Security. The highlighted polling and analysis were the result of a collaboration with ECFR’s Re:Order project and was made possible with the support of Stiftung Mercator, but does not necessarily represent the views of it.
