After taking office, Donald Trump did not stop the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. Yet, there are high expectations that his administration will at least attempt a ceasefire in the coming months. Both Ukraine and the EU countries have been waiting to see the US strategy for the settlement and calibrate their next steps according to that. However, it is high time for Europeans to think about their own levers and how they can shape a future negotiation in a way that is more favourable to Ukraine’s and their own interests. What, in this respect, could Europe put on the table? What are Moscow’s considerations when it comes to settlement – is the Kremlin ready for a genuine negotiation which – inevitably – includes compromises? Is there anything Europe could do to narrow Moscow’s options and force a rethink of its war aims?
