Europe’s political choices in an age of ambition
Europe is tackling pressing questions about its own security, economic resilience and geopolitical identity, in a global context marked by war, rivalry and fragmentation. Economic, military, technological interdependencies are both harnessed and weaponized by states – never quite at war, never quite at peace. Global hyper-connectivity is uniting as much as dividing people; Russia’s war on Ukraine continues to test the resolve and boundaries of NATO and EU member states; and the return of President Trump is fundamentally reshaping the transatlantic relationship with implications for Europe and the world. These challenges come at a time when domestic politics divide many European member states and with that the European Union, whose agency is questioned on foreign policy issues.
While the challenges are clear, they also create a watershed moment. Europeans can – and must – reassess and pursue their security and economic interests together and forge a renewed community of purpose.
Historically a peace project, how can Europe reclaim agency over its own defense and security and reshape the transatlantic relationship? What is the geoeconomic common good for Europe and how can European states advance it proactively? What is the “Europe way” in a world of “unpeace”, grey zones and trade-offs?
