During his visit to Warsaw earlier this week, Finnish Foreign Minister and Member of the ECFR Council Alexander Stubb publicly supported recommendations made in Nick Witney and Jeremy Shapiro's report "Towards a Post-American Europe: A Power Audit of EU-US Relations".
Stubb visited the Polish capital on Monday 30th November to meet with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. While in Warsaw Stubb gave a speech entitled: "The EU as a Global Power", in which he addressed some of the internal and external challenges facing the EU as well as the EU's role on the world stage. On the topic of transatlantic relations he echoed recommendations made in his recent report, outlining the need for a "post-American Europe" and calling for the EU to present itself as a ‘powerful and united player' vis-à-vis the United States.
On other issues directly related to Nick's work on transatlantic relations, Stubb stressed the importance of deepening the EU's engagement with its neighbourhood as well as the need for a strategic EU-Russia partnership. He additionally welcomed the foreign policy opportunities represented by the new Lisbon Treaty as well as recent ‘Polish activism' in European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).
