Two years on from the initial democratic wave that spread across North Africa, a new set of challenges are emerging not least with the events of the past week. Europe’s response to that first wave was encouraging, but this is no time to relapse into business as usual. Rather, now is the time for Europe to raise its game. Even given Europe’s current constraints, it can and should generate a bolder vision for its relations with North Africa. A vision that is less technocratic and more focused on the political, geo-strategic, security, as well as economic cooperation opportunities and interests now in play.
