China Analysis

Produced and published by the Asia Centre in Paris in collaboration with ECFR, China Analysis is a bi-monthly analytical survey of Chinese news and debate.

Analysing geopolitical shifts in the world has been a long-standing Chinese obsession, and in the past decade, international relations and foreign affairs have become widely discussed within Chinese intellectual circles and in the media.

While censorship and distortion remain common in China's heavily-controlled news establishment, media coverage is increasingly key to understanding emerging trends within China. China Analysis introduces Western audiences to the debates inside China's expert and think-tank world, and helps the policy community understand how China's leadership thinks about domestic and foreign policy issues.

China Analysis mainly draws on Chinese mainland sources, but also monitors content in Chinese-language publications from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region continues to function as a rumour-mill about politics in the mainland. While not always accurate, reports from Hong Kong tend to reflect the diversity of Chinese thinking, while the Taiwanese press has the highest degree of freedom within China.

Each issue carries a leader summarising events and trends of the past two months. We pay particular attention to issues of direct European concern, and to strategic debates within China. We analyse the repercussions of China's slow transition to the rule of law and its breathtaking economic growth. We follow debates on Chinese reforms and report on tensions within the society.

The bulletin is edited by Francois Godement, Director of the Asia Centre in Paris and Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. A French version of 'China Analysis' has existed since 2005, and has been widely distributed in academic and policy circles.
