The European Council on Foreign Relations

ECFR this week: 11th May 2012

Europe is changing. While hopes are high that Francois Hollande can change the politics of the eurozone, the election in Greece radically transformed the Greek political landscape. However, as Thomas Klau argues, both events can be seen as catalysts for a political reinvention of Europe

Francois Hollande's first official visit will be to Germany to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel. The talks next week in Berlin will focus on strategies for growth in Europe - and Hollande's plan to renegotiate the fiscal compact. Read Sebastian Dullien latest essay for a good overview of how the new EU treaty works and how it can be improved.

The Merkel-Hollande meeting will also give a first indication of how Franco-German relations are likely to develop in the coming years. In a new policy brief Ulrike Guerot and Thomas Klau look at the new dynamics of the relationship and what it means for Europe - so make sure you check our website next week!
